I began this piece a few weeks ago with a plan to simply use only the remnants gifted me in a small bag from a friend and fellow fiber artist. I love an artistic challenge and this bag of remnants was a great beginning.  I also desired to have a composition that would be completely created by hand that would be easy to just pick up and sew a bit on here and there.   Originally, my plan was to create an abstract that was about 30 inches x 24 inches.  I found that I had a remnant of batting that was about that same size so I began laying out my fabric treasures of hand dyed fabrics and batik fabrics of various sizes. from the bag.  Somewhere in the process I came across a large brown curvy piece that made me think of mountains.  That's when my design went to a landscape.  Landscape art is not my usual go to design so that would add to my personal challenge.  I gently overlapped each fabric creating a pieced grassy foreground, a blue sky area and a mountain range.  Brown is a great color but it is not my first choice.  I should have listened to that internal voice at that time but I did not.  As I hand stitched each small section into place, I grew more and more suspicious of the brown mountains being a good choice.  Finally, I hand painted over the brown mountains with purple but still wasn't satisfied.  I realized that I had to change the rules I had set for myself  with this personal challenge.  And, since the rules were self imposed, I could change them if I wanted to.  It wasn't cheating. I have begun the process of covering up portions of the brown to purple painted mountains and I'm liking the results.  I really should have listened to the internal voice when I was originally designing this piece.  It really is OK though.   So much of art is trying new things, playing and having fun.  It will take extra work to redo this mountain range but I am much more at peace with the new direction.  It will be finished this month and available for sale.  

I received this Quilt Art Commission several weeks ago.  The client mentioned they had never been ahead of buying a birthday gift but that this one was special.  He wanted some specific elements and even sent me a rough drawing of his idea.  His female friend's has an October birthday so he wanted a tree with orange, red and yellow leaves.  A green spring tree was also important representing growth and new life. The infinity sign along with a basic compass were key elements requested to completed the design. Although I had this Art Quilt completed and delivered  in under two weeks, I've been waiting for the client to gift it to his friend.  I love being a part of a birthday or special occasion surprise.  I'd love to help you celebrated your loved one well too.  Contact me so we can get started.
